Interested in LigerBots? Information Meeting on June 2

For students interested in technology, business, graphic design, public speaking, grant writing, STEM, or just a cool student activity, the LigerBots, Newton's award-winning combined South and North high school robotics team, offers all those opportunities and more.

There will be a meeting for interested students on Thursday, June 2, 6:30 – 8:30PM, in the Newton South wood shop, Room 9170. This will be a hands-on evening for prospective team members (including rising freshmen), with opportunities to drive a robot, use power tools, do engineering challenge games, be part of a new social media campaign and participate in other activities to help students see what makes the LigerBots a top robotics team.

Dessert will be served. For more information, email [email protected].

Hartford, BattleCry, and more!

Whole Foods

The Ligerbots are excited to be participating in a May competition: “Battle Cry” at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on May 21 and 22. This will put our robot up against some of the most successful teams in the Northeast.

We were pleased to be awarded the Innovation in Control Award sponsored by Rockwell Automation at both the BU District Competition and at the Hartford New England District Championship in recognition of the precision capabilities of our robot. We ranked 45th out of 181 robots in the district and our vision-controlled shooting mechanism was ranked third worldwide, with 95% accuracy.

In addition to a busy competition season, the team just finished its biggest outreach effort of the year with our month-long “Occupy Whole Foods” campaign. This is when the team spends hours in Whole Foods, sharing our mission with shoppers. For the first time we had a presence in both Newton stores, where we talked to members of our community about STEM, FIRST, and the LigerBots

At the beginning of the competition season the team had the opportunity to publish an oped in the Newton TAB on Gracious Professionalism.

LigerBots are Traveling to Hartford!
April 11, 2016

It’s April and that means it is LigerBots Month at Whole Foods! Shop at either Whole Food stores in Newton and buy a LigerBot Coupon to support the team and stop by our table to learn more about our team and our students! To support the LigerBots, talk to the cashier at the register and they’ll add an amount you choose to your purchase – every little bit helps.

It’s official, out of the 181 teams registered in New England, we are among 63 teams qualified to compete at the New England District Championships. We’re going to Hartford to compete in the NE District Championships! We had a great performance at BU. We were honored to host our Governor, Charlie Baker, who came to the tournament to talk about the MassFIRST initiative.

Our student engineers continue to brainstorm and adapt our robot, first addressing a friction problem with our treads and now are reacting to teams targeting our robot because of our high goal capabilities.

The team cannot wait to compete at Hartford!
