The UNH Whittemore Hockey Arena containing the pits and field
Over the weekend of March 22-23 we competed and won, at our second district event of the 2025 season at the University of New Hampshire! After making it to the finals at our first district event, Granite State, we dedicated ourselves to bettering our robot. We spent many hours improving both the functionality and efficiency of our robot to ensure that it performs to the best of its ability.
LigerBots at the top of the leaderboard
In the qualifiers, we won 7 out of our 12 matches, and were ranked first for quite a while before our team encountered technical problems. Despite this, at the end of the qualifying rounds we ranked 4th out of the 40 teams, assuring a spot in a top playoff alliance.
Our robot, Hydra, with our alliance members’ robots
During Alliance Selection, we were the first pick of Alliance 2 by Team 133, BERT. The second pick was team 5902, The Wire Clippers. During the playoffs we did quite well despite our defeat at the hands of Alliance 1 and subsequently moving to the lower bracket. We made a full recovery and moved into finals, beating Alliance 1 for the win! We are now ranked 7th in the New England district.
LigerBots cheering from the stands
Our drive team would not be able to stay motivated without the support of their teammates. Throughout the competition and especially during the finals, Our students and mentors were proudly cheering on the drive team.
Emily P. about to be interviewed for the Dean’s List award
Drive team member and Chief Strategy Officer Emily P., a Dean’s List nominee was selected as a finalist for District Championships, where she will again compete for the title. The Dean’s List award is an award presented to a student who demonstrates great leadership and dedication. Also, Coach John Sangiolo was nominated for the Woodie Flowers award, which honors mentors who demonstrate wonderful and effective communication skills. In addition, we won the Quality Award for our robot’s complex and robust design.
Our whole team proudly stands with our winning banner
It was amazing to experience our first win in 11 years! We are excited to be competing at the New England District Championship in Springfield on April 2-5! Stay tuned!
Balloon Cars With the Girl Scouts
Troop member cuts out a car template.
On March 16, from 2-3:30 pm, the LigerBots hosted an outreach event at the Scandinavian Center in West Newton for a local Girl Scout troop. Team members taught the troop how to build balloon cars so that they could earn their car racing badges.
In order to build a functional balloon car, and earn their car racing badge, troop members needed to use their problem-solving and innovative skills.
During the build, the girls faced a few challenges with parts of the car not working, specifically with the wheels and the balloons. However, they kept pushing through and eventually, they got their vehicles working. Ultimately, many girls overcame hardships and showcased their creative abilities throughout this event.
Ligerbots member, Fiona, helps Girl Scouts with the assembly process
We asked the event point Fiona about her experience at this event and here’s what she said: “We helped the Girl Scouts get their car racing badges with balloon cars, the activity was rightfully challenging for the group. It was great to see all the girls troubleshoot and keep trying when some part of the balloon car was not working. Especially when it came to adjusting the wheels and fixing the balloons it was challenging for many of them, but they kept pushing through it and most of them got their car working.”
Overall, it was a great afternoon! We hope to see some troop members again at our future outreach events including Earth Day Science Fair at Newton North High School on April 27th from 12-4pm and Newton Highlands Village Day on June 8th, starting at 11am!
Official 2025 Debut – Granite State
March 7, 2025
LigerBots after receiving our awards
On the weekend of March 1-2, we attended the Granite State Competition at Salem High School in Salem, NH, taking home an overall rank of 4th!
New Hampshire governor Kelly Ayotte giving a speech
A few very special guests gave speeches before the event started, including FIRST founder Dean Kamen, New Hampshire Education Director Frank Edelblut, New Hampshire congresswoman Maggie Goodlander, and New Hampshire governor Kelly Ayotte.
Yonatan, a LigerBots member, interviews FIRST founder Dean Kamen
Team member Yonatan had the opportunity to interview Dean Kamen. Mr. Kamen expressed his pleasure seeing politicians of different political parties using FIRST’s core value of “coopertition” to support FIRST robotics students. He then said that when students discover FIRST, they could go from not being interested in STEAM at all to being very interested, and that FIRST is “Not only really accessible, it’s not only really fun, it could be the start of a fantastic career”. Mr. Kamen closed by expressing that he admires how FIRST alumni become very successful in STEAM and in society as a whole.
Team members scouting and cheering
After the speeches wrapped up, we started the qualifying matches. Our scouters were hard at work watching other teams’ movements to help our strategy team decide who to select as alliance partners in the playoffs. The qualifying matches were stressful for our drive team as we had a very tough schedule, facing off against strong teams such as Windham Windup and Mechanical Advantage on multiple occasions. Drive team member Liam said it was “a little unlucky, but we’ll do our best and just kinda win all our matches”. On top of that, we had a lot of matches with short breaks in between. While this was a setback, pit crew member Eliot said “we got done all the things that we set out to achieve”. In the end, we beat the odds and won 9 out of our 12 qualifying matches.
Our drive team and our other alliance drive teams stand with our robots
On Sunday, after the final qualification match, we went into alliance selection. We were ranked 4th, meaning we were captain of the 4th alliance. However, we happily gave up our position to join the alliance 2 captain, team 4909 (Bionics). Team 1512, The Big Red, rounded out our alliance as the third member. We fought our way through the upper bracket to the finals but we were ultimately defeated by alliance 1, consisting of team 9443 (Aluminum Panthers), team 6328 (Mechanical Advantage), and team 3467 (Windham Windup). For our hard work, we were awarded the Finalist Award.
The Autonomous Award
We also won the Autonomous Award, an award presented to a team with the most effective autonomous programming. The judges said we “demonstrated a clear ability to reliably score coral in autonomous mode with a robust, reliable approach”. In the end, we are feeling great after our top position and awards. We hope to keep it up at our next competition at UNH on March 22-23!

Impact Exchange Teams Hosted by the LigerBots
On February 27th, the LigerBots partnered with Chop Shop to host the Impact Exchange at the Granite State Competition, in Salem NH. The FIRST Impact Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST. It honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST.
The LigerBots present their Impact Award submission
This event was a wonderful opportunity to collaborate and share information with other FRC teams. Those teams competing for the Award had the chance to present their Impact Presentation and receive valuable feedback from their teammates and other teams. The goal being to change and improve upon the presentation before the time came to go before the impact judges.

LigerBots at Burr Elementary School’s STEAM Fair
On February 28, The LigerBots were generously invited by the Burr Parent Teacher Organization to the school’s STEAM fair.
Team members lead the binary beads activity
At the fair’s opening, we showcased a variety of STEAM activities from binary beads to coloring. These activities are meant to help kids engage in and have fun with topics relating to science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.
Team member, Sam, explains the function of the robot
We also showcased our 2022 robot. Overall, we answered questions related to the robot, explained its basic functions, and how it works.
Kids playing catch with the robot
Kids also had the opportunity to interact with the 2022 robot feeding balls in and waiting for them to be launched by the robot in a game of catch. Interacting with the robot in this way was meant to showcase the myriad of possibilities available,if they continued to pursue their knowledge on STEAM.
Stay tuned for our exciting upcoming events and competitions, including UNH on March 22-23 and DCMP (if we qualify), on April 2-5!
